About
Willie “DJ Casper” Perry Jr. Legendary DJ, Entertainer and Creator of the “Cha Cha Slide” Willie Perry Jr., internationally known as **DJ Casper** and **Mr. C the Slide Man**, was a legendary Chicago DJ, songwriter, performer and dance innovator whose music brought generations of people together. Through his creativity, infectious energy and unmistakable voice, DJ Casper transformed a locally created dance routine into a worldwide cultural phenomenon. Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, Perry developed a passion for entertaining people through music. He became known professionally as “DJ Casper” because of his signature practice of performing dressed in all white. Long before achieving international recognition, he built his reputation by energizing crowds at weddings, parties, community celebrations and other special events throughout the Chicago area. DJ Casper’s most historic contribution began when he created a dance routine for an aerobics class taught by his nephew, a fitness trainer at Bally Total Fitness in Chicago. Originally known as the **“Casper Slide,”** the routine developed into the song and line dance now celebrated around the world as the **“Cha Cha Slide.”** With DJ Casper calling out each movement, the song invited everyone to participate—regardless of age, background or dancing ability. Its simple instructions, energetic rhythm and spirit of togetherness helped it spread from Chicago fitness clubs and neighborhood gatherings to radio stations, schools, weddings, family reunions, sporting events, festivals and dance floors across the globe. The song became an international success and reached No. 1 on the United Kingdom Singles Chart in 2004. More than a popular record, the “Cha Cha Slide” became a shared cultural experience. Few DJs or recording artists have created a song that can immediately bring an entire room to its feet. With one familiar command from DJ Casper, strangers became dance partners, families created memories and celebrations became moments of unity. DJ Casper’s influence extended far beyond the success of one song. He demonstrated the power of the DJ as an entertainer, instructor, innovator and community connector. He helped elevate Chicago’s dance culture while inspiring DJs to understand that their role is not simply to play music, but to create experiences that move people—both physically and emotionally. Even while facing serious health challenges, DJ Casper remained an encouraging and uplifting presence. He used his platform to support cancer-related events and reminded others battling the disease to remain hopeful, positive and determined. His courage reflected the same joyful and resilient spirit that defined his music. Willie “DJ Casper” Perry Jr. passed away on August 7, 2023, but his voice, vision and legacy continue to fill dance floors around the world. Every time people hear the opening instructions, move together in unison and celebrate through dance, DJ Casper’s legacy lives on. The **Elite Level Steppers Hall of Fame** proudly honors Willie “DJ Casper” Perry Jr. as a **Legendary Hall of Fame DJ** for his groundbreaking contributions to music, dance, entertainment and the global DJ community. His work did more than create a dance—it created a movement that united the world, one slide at a time.
